Sports Injuries/Massage

Sports Injuries & Massage

Injuries can occur in the young or old, recreational or competitive athletes. Regardless of the cause, the treatment will be the same.

Physiotherapy can assist with all stages of the injury process from the start to the final rehabilitation phase, returning the injured body part to normal function.

If the injury does not require urgent medical attention, you can start your own treatment at home using RICE therapy. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).

At the early stage, consulting our physiotherapists, will allow you a diagnosis of the problem, and an idea as to the expected time for recovery. They will assist and treat you through to the final rehabilitative stage and back to full activity.

Treatment may include:

  • RICE
  • Strapping
  • Joint mobilisations
  • Soft tissue massage & release
  • Ultrasound therapy
  • exercises & stretches
  • Proprioception re-training
  • Final rehabilitation & return to sporting activity.

“Early intervention leads to a quicker & more complete recovery”

Sports massage was designed for athletes, but is useful for anyone with chronic pain, injury or movement problems, especially anyone participating in regular physical activity. It assists with the prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons. The general public are the most in need of sports massages due to the prolonged dysfunctional work postures that they sustain for long periods of time. This can have an adverse effect anywhere in the body causing aches and pains but especially within the neck, mid and lower back regions.

Sports Massage involves the use of deep soft tissue manipulation techniques and exercise advice.  It uses a variety of different techniques depending on the needs of the individual. It might include some or all of the following techniques: effleurage, petrissage, vibrations, frictions, dermal lifting, compressions, soft tissue release and specific stretching techniques. It can help prevent injuries to the soft tissues and joints, as well as facilitate repair of overexerted or strained muscles by increasing blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, which will help reduce swelling, muscle fatigue as well as muscle tension.

The benefits of a sports massage include:

  • Relieve aches & pains
  • Improve flexibility
  • Improve range of movement of joints
  • Breakdown scar tissue & adhesions
  • Improve circulation & lymphatic flow
  • Increase or decrease muscle tone
  • Improve postural awareness
  • Identify potential causes & assist in injury prevention
  • Speed up recovery from training & aid rehabilitation
  • Promote relaxation & mental preparation
